425mVtypicaldropoutvoltageatfullloadmakethemespeciallyvaluableinbatterypowered
systemsandashighefficiencynoisefiltersinpost-regulatorapplications.
TheCOS2915x/2930x/2950x/2975xfamilyofregulatorsarefullyprotectedfromdamageduetofault
conditions.Currentlimitingisprovided.Thislimitingislinear;outputcurrentunderoverload
conditionsisconstant.Thermalshutdowndisablesthedevicewhenthedietemperatureexceedsthe
+125°Cmaximumsafeoperatingtemperature.Linetransientprotectionallowsdeviceandload
survivalevenwhentheinputvoltagespikesbetween–0.3Vand+40V.
Whentheinputvoltageexceedsapproximately36V,theover-voltagesensordisablestheregulator.
Theoutputstructureoftheseregulatorsallowsvoltagesinexcessofthedesiredoutputvoltagetobe
appliedwithoutreversecurrentflow.COS29xx2versionsofferalogic-levelON/OFFcontrol.When
disabled,thedevicesdrawnearlyzerocurrent.Anadditionalfeatureofthisregulatorfamilyisa
commonpinout.Adesign’scurrentrequirementmaychangeupordown,butusethesameboard

ofthiscapacitorisdependentupontheoutputcurrent;lowercurrentsallowsmallercapacitors.The
COS2915x/2930x/2950x/2975xregulatorsarestablewiththefollowingminimumcapacitorvaluesat
fullload,asnotedinTable3-1.ThiscapacitorneednotbeanexpensivelowESRtype:aluminum
electrolyticsareadequate.Infact,extremelylowESRcapacitorsmaycontributetoinstability.
Tantalumcapacitorsarerecommendedforsystemswherefastloadtransientresponseisimportant
wheretheregulatorispoweredfromasourcewithhighACimpedance,a0.1μFcapacitorconnected
betweenInputandGNDisrecommended.Thiscapacitorshouldhavegoodcharacteristicstoabove
250kHz.

COS29xx3versionsfeatureanErrorFlag,whichlooksattheoutputvoltageandsignalsanerror
conditionwhenthisvoltagedrops5%belowitsexpectedvalue.Theerrorflagisanopen-collector
outputthatpullslowunderfaultconditions.Itmaysink10mA.Lowoutputvoltagesignifiesanumber
ofpossibleproblems,includinganovercurrentfault(thedeviceisincurrent-limit)andlowinput
voltage.Theflagoutputisfunctionalduringover-temperatureshutdownconditions.
3.6EnableInput
COS29xx2versionsfeatureanenable(EN)inputthatallowsON/OFFcontrolofthedevice.Special
designallows“zero”currentdrainwhenthedeviceisdisabled;onlymicroamperesofleakagecurrent
flows.TheENinputhasTTL/CMOScompatiblethresholdsforsimpleinterfacingwithlogic,ormay
bedirectlytiedto≤36V.
