TheCOS29302isahighcurrent,highaccuracy,
lowdropoutvoltage(LDO)regulatorwhich
features350mVto425mV(fullload)typical
dropoutvoltagesandverylowgroundcurrent.
Designedforhighcurrentloads,thedevice
alsofindsapplicationsinlowercurrent,
extremelylowdropoutcriticalsystems,where
theirtinydropoutvoltageandgroundcurrent
valuesareimportantattributes.
TheCOS29302arefullyprotectedagainst
overcurrentfaults,reversedinputpolarity,
reversedleadinsertion,overtemperature
operation,andpositiveandnegativetransient
voltagespikes.Fivepinversionsfeaturelogic
levelON/OFFcontrol(COS29302)andanerror
flagthatsignalswhenevertheoutputfallsoutof
regulation(COS29303).Flaggedstatesinclude
lowinputvoltage(dropout),outputcurrentlimit,
overtemperatureshutdown,andextremely
highvoltagespikesontheinput.

voltageregulatorapplications.Their350mVto425mVtypicaldropoutvoltageatfullloadmake
themespeciallyvaluableinbatterypoweredsystemsandashighefficiencynoisefiltersin
post-regulatorapplications.
TheCOS29302isfullyprotectedfromdamageduetofaultconditions.Currentlimitingisprovided.
Thislimitingislinear;outputcurrentunderoverloadconditionsisconstant.Thermalshutdown
disablesthedevicewhenthedietemperatureexceedsthe+125°Cmaximumsafeoperating
temperature.Linetransientprotectionallowsdeviceandloadsurvivalevenwhentheinputvoltage
spikesbetween0and+18V.COS29302offeralogic-levelON/OFFcontrol.Whendisabled,the
devicesdrawnearlyzerocurrent.

externalresistorsareusedinthetypicalapplicationcircuitasshowninFigure1.Theresistorvalues
arecalculatedbyfollowingequation.

Intheequationabove,VOUTisthedesiredoutputvoltage.TheresistorvaluebetweenVOUTandthe
adjustpinshouldnotexceed10kΩ.Largervaluescancauseinstability.Applicationswithwidely
varyingloadcurrentsmayscaletheresistorstodrawtheminimumloadcurrentrequiredforproper
operation.
4.3CapacitorRequirements
Forstabilityandminimumoutputnoise,acapacitorontheregulatoroutputisnecessary.Thevalue
ofthiscapacitorisdependentupontheoutputcurrent;lowercurrentsallowsmallercapacitors.The
COS29302regulatorarestablewiththeminimumcapacitorvaluesof10µFatfullload.This
capacitorneednotbeanexpensivelowESRtype:aluminumelectrolyticsareadequate.Infact,
extremelylowESRcapacitorsmaycontributetoinstability.Tantalumcapacitorsarerecommended
forsystemswherefastloadtransientresponseisimportantwheretheregulatorispoweredfroma
sourcewithhighACimpedance,a0.1μFcapacitorconnectedbetweenInputandGNDis
recommended.Thiscapacitorshouldhavegoodcharacteristicstoabove250kHz.

TheCOS29302regulatorsarespecifiedbetweenfiniteloads.Iftheoutputcurrentistoosmall,
leakagecurrentsdominateandtheoutputvoltagerises.The7mAminimumloadcurrentswamps
anyexpectedleakagecurrentacrosstheoperatingtemperaturerange

COS29302versionsfeatureanenable(EN)inputthatallowsON/OFFcontrolofthedevice.Special
designallows“zero”currentdrainwhenthedeviceisdisabled;onlymicro-amperesofleakage
currentflows.TheENinputhasTTL/CMOScompatiblethresholdsforsimpleinterfacingwithlogic,
ormaybetiedtoVINifitisnotrequiredforON/OFFcontrol.
