4.1.1NormalMode
ALOWlevelonpinSTBselectsNormalmode.Inthismode,thetransceivercantransmitand
receivedataviathebuslinesCANHandCANL(seeFigure2fortheblockdiagram).Thedifferential
receiverconvertstheanalogdataonthebuslinesintodigitaldatawhichisoutputtopinRXD.The
slopesoftheoutputsignalsonthebuslinesarecontrolledinternallyandareoptimizedinawaythat
guaranteesthelowestpossibleEME.
4.1.2StandbyMode
AHIGHlevelonpinSTBselectsStandbymode.InStandbymode,thetransceiverisnotableto
transmitorcorrectlyreceivedataviathebuslines.ThetransmitterandNormal-modereceiverblocks
areswitchedofftoreducesupplycurrent,andonlyalow-powerdifferentialreceivermonitorsthebus
linesforactivity.Thewake-upfilterontheoutputofthelow-powerreceiverdoesnotlatchbus
dominantstates,butensuresthatonlybusdominantandbusrecessivestatesthatpersistlonger
thantfltr(wake)busarereflectedonpinRXD.InStandbymode,thebuslinesarebiasedtogroundto
minimizethesystemsupplycurrent.Thelow-powerreceiverissuppliedbyVIO,andiscapableof
detectingCANbusactivityevenifVIOistheonlysupplyvoltageavailable.WhenpinRXDgoesLOW
tosignalawake-uprequest,atransitiontoNormalmodewillnotbetriggereduntilSTBisforced
LOW.
4.2Fail-SafeFeatures
4.2.1TXDDominantTime-outFunction
A‘TXDdominanttime-out’timerisstartedwhenpinTXDissetLOW.IftheLOWstateonpinTXD
persistsforlongerthantto(dom)TXD,thetransmitterisdisabled,releasingthebuslinestorecessive
state.Thisfunctionpreventsahardwareand/orsoftwareapplicationfailurefromdrivingthebuslines
toapermanentdominantstate(blockingallnetworkcommunications).TheTXDdominanttime-out
timerisresetwhenpinTXDissettoHIGH.TheTXDdominanttime-outtimealsodefinesthe
minimumpossiblebitrateof40kbit/s.

InStandbymodea’busdominanttime-out’timerisstartedwhentheCANbuschangesfrom
recessivetodominantstate.Ifthedominantstateonthebuspersistsforlongerthantto(dom)bus,the
RXDpinisresettoHIGH.Thisfunctionpreventsaclampeddominantbus(duetoabusshort-circuit
orafailureinoneoftheothernodesonthenetwork)fromgeneratingapermanentwake-uprequest.
Thebusdominanttime-outtimerisresetwhentheCANbuschangesfromdominanttorecessive
state.
4.2.3InternalBiasingofTXDandSTBInputPins
PinsTXDandSTBhaveinternalpull-upstoVIOtoensureasafe,definedstateincaseoneorbothof
thesepinsareleftfloating.Pull-upcurrentsflowinthesepinsinallstates;bothpinsshouldbeheld
HIGHinStandbymodetominimizestandbycurrent.
4.2.4UndervoltageDetectiononPinsVccandVIO
ShouldVCCdropbelowtheVCCundervoltagedetectionlevel,VUVD(VCC),thetransceiverwillswitchto
Standbymode.ThelogicstateofpinSTBwillbeignoreduntilVCChasrecovered.ShouldVIOdrop
belowtheVIOundervoltagedetectionlevel,VUVD(VIO),thetransceiverwillswitchoffanddisengage
fromthebus(zeroload)untilVIOhasrecovered.
4.2.5Over-temperatureProtection
Theoutputdriversareprotectedagainstover-temperatureconditions.Ifthevirtualjunction
temperatureexceedstheshutdownjunctiontemperature,Tj(sd),theoutputdriverswillbedisabled
untilthevirtualjunctiontemperaturefallsbelowTj(sd)andTXDbecomesrecessiveagain.Including
theTXDconditionensuresthatoutputdriveroscillationduetotemperaturedriftisavoided.
4.2.6UnpoweredDevice
TheCOS1042isdesignedtobe“idealpassive”or“noload”totheCANbusifitisunpowered.The
busterminals(CANH,CANL)haveextremelylowleakagecurrentswhenthedeviceisunpoweredto
avoidloadingdownthebus.Thisiscriticalifsomenodesofthenetworkareunpoweredwhilethe
restoftheofnetworkremainsinoperation.Thelogicterminalsalsohaveextremelylowleakage
currentswhenthedeviceisunpoweredtoavoidloadingdownothercircuitsthatmayremain
powered.

theterminalfloats.
4.2.8CANBusShortCircuitCurrentLimiting
TheCOS1042hasThedevicehastwoprotectionfeaturesthatlimittheshortcircuitcurrentwhena
CANbuslineisshort-circuitfaultcondition:drivercurrentlimiting(bothdominantandrecessive
states)andTXDdominantstatetimeouttopreventpermanenthighershortcircuitcurrentofthe
dominantstateduringasystemfault.
4.3SPLITOutputPinandVIOSupplyPin
TwoversionsoftheCOS1042areavailable,onlydifferinginthefunctionofasinglepin.Pin5is
eitheraSPLIToutputpinoraVIOsupplypin.UsingtheSPLITpinontheCOS1042Tinconjunction
withasplitterminationnetwork(seeFigure3andFigure4)canhelptostabilizetherecessive
voltagelevelonthebus.ThiswillreduceEMEinnetworkswithDCleakagetoground(e.g.from
deactivatednodeswithpoorbusleakageperformance).InNormalmode,pinSPLITdeliversaDC
outputvoltageof0.5VCC.InStandbymodeorwhenVCCisoff,pinSPLITisfloating.Whennotused,
theSPLITpinshouldbeleftopen.
PinVIOontheCOS1042T/3shouldbeconnectedtothemicro-controllersupplyvoltage(seeFigure
5).ThiswilladjustthesignallevelsofpinsTXD,RXDandSTBtotheI/Olevelsofthe
micro-controller.PinVIOalsoprovidestheinternalsupplyvoltageforthelow-powerdifferential
receiverofthetransceiver.Forapplicationsrunninginlow-powermode,thisallowsthebuslinesto
bemonitoredforactivityevenifthereisnosupplyvoltageonpinVCC.ForversionsoftheCOS1042
withoutaVIOpin,theVIOinputisinternallyconnectedtoVCC.ThissetsthesignallevelsofpinsTXD,
RXDandSTBtolevelscompatiblewith5Vmicro-controllers.
